Istanbul Hagia Sophia Tour

“ Daily Istanbul Tour ”

The first basilica-shaped structure, known as the Great Church and thought to be the predecessor of today's Hagia Sophia, was built by Emperor II. It was completed by Constantine (337-361) around the year 360, approximately where the Basilica Cistern is located today. This structure, which was demolished in 404 as a result of the escalation of tension between the supporters of Patriarch Ioannes Chrysostomos and Empress Eudokia, was replaced by Emperor II. During the reign of Theodosios (408-450), a new church was built, the construction of which was completed in 415. Starting from 430, this structure began to be called "Hagia Sophia", which means "Holy Wisdom" of God. This building was also destroyed during the Nika Revolt that broke out against Emperor Justinian I in January 532, and Anthemios of Tralles and Isidoros of Miletus were appointed as architects for the construction of the building by the same emperor. As a result of 5 years of construction, the building was opened on 27 December 537.

To visit Hagia Sophia, you can join our Daily Istanbul tours or hire one of our experienced guides to accompany you.
